Grey Lodge Archives

I recently tracked down the pdf's for nearly all of the issues of the now-deceased counterculture online zine Grey Lodge Occult Review. The site was taken down due to "legal threats and religious hackers". To see the table of contents for the issues visit the Wayback Machine here. Along with the rabbit hole that is Deoxy, this was one of my formative sanctuaries for all things mindfuckery.

Oddisee/Damu the Fudgemunk

Each track was produced while Oddisee stayed in the city it was titled after. The result is a 24 city sonic tour of the world.

Crunchy drums bolster intricately woven narratives of soul-infused samples in compositions that thump and groove all at the same time. Horns appear from nowhere before dissolving sumptuously into the mix. Layers are steadily unveiled only to gradually fold back in on themselves.

All-time favorite beat tapes. Some people turn plastic soda bottles into islands, others morph their record collections into beats.

(2011)

Lush synths, plenty of reverb, dream inducing waves of electronics, these lay the foundation for Tropics' latest effort. Taking a slight sidestep away from the chill wave of just yesterday, like so many of his contemporaries, Chris Ward delves into a more indie rock-based sound. His embracing of his vocals and the introduction of the multi-instrument approach bring a welcomed human element to his tracks. There's a little nod to the blue eyed soul of the 70s as well. The waves may not be so chill but the jams are there.

The group’s two 45s exist in single digit quantities, only a handful have heard the rest of this Ho Chi Min City-damaged oeuvre. Their two 45s have been bolstered with four previously unissued tracks, found in the basement of a now-condemned motorcycle gang hideout in Dayton, Ohio.

Sun Ra - Sleeping Beauty (1979)

My favorite Sun Ra album I've found, more in the vein of Miles Davis' 'In A Silent Way' and Herbie Hancock's 'Mwandishi' than the lo-fi, orchestral Free Jazz experimentation of early Sun Ra. Beautiful stuff all around.

Tinariwen - Tassili (2011)

Taureg musicians Tinariwen have made some shifts for the creation of their new album Tassili. One move is that of geography. The recording sessions took place in the southern Algerian desert park of Tassili N’Ajjer after their traditional homebase in Mali was deemed too unsafe for outsiders. The outsiders in questions comprise the other big change at hand. For their new album, Tinariwen invited some great roots-art-minded musicians to record with them including Tunde Adebimpe & Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio who are feature playing and singing on several songs including in the video above. They are also joined on the album by guitarist Nels Cline and members of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. From what we’ve heard, the result of this cultural blend doesn’t deter from Tinariwen’s blissful desert blues. In fact, the songs are even more earthier and gorgeous. -Dublab

Daedelus - Toil & Trouble Mix

"'Toil & Trouble', as inspired by the phenomenal Tim Burton Retrospective at LACMA thru Halloween; is an attempt to evoke some of the very disparate forces at play and playful in Mr. Burton's oeuvre. Here is a gentleman that has crossed every creative boundary with iconic style, so a daunting task indeed to try and reveal his unique spirit in song, but with much joy in my attempt. Deciding to have this mix be a sort of counter-soundtrack for the installation, as well a meditation on his considerable style. You'll find ancient and classic tracks with some modern musics from the likes of Shlohmo, Airhead, Flying Lotus with MatthewDavid, and much much more. I do so hope you enjoy, or at least revel in the airs solely Tim Burton." - Daedelus

Edan [2nd Verse]

The virals are the scorned into The Doors open
To bring raw dosage in the form of swarm locusts
Beatles and Birds that seem evil and absurd
Gather with The Eagles that swerve to form herds
Butterflies made of Iron ride the horizon
Giving Credence to the Revival of Poseidon
Who feeds in the Clearwater, you feel slaughter
But Lovecrafts of abyss, the horror for tomorrow
Zombies and walking dead stalk the Talking Heads
Insects with open legs halt with awful dread
All along the web the thread remains rare
With bloodshed that led to where the little feet flare
To lost places, thoughts lost for all ages
Where slow faces sit on the wall with tall mazes
That overlook the 13th Floor with long gazes
Connected to the earthly core through elevators

Check it, the Underground is made of Velvet
Where buttersoft brothers talk tough on wax but ain't sell shit
Every crack of the rap ain't the Elvis
My Aqualung cultivates the Blue Oyster shellfish
I design my Blurs before swine
And form rhymes that take you to a world before time
Where living things coexisted with Crimson Kings
Who on the Moon's Dark Side painted pretty things
That illustrated lessons conceived by the Mothers of Invention
Who also built the Stairway To Heaven, it's a present
Only to be stolen by a Thief, the Judas Preist
Who unleashed his devil magic
My mental fabric too thick for Lenny Kravitz
Who imitates Jimi Hendrix in every facette
Semi-Automatic Rap Heavy Metal Jackets
Kill with mathematics to build with Black Sabbath

Davi.Augusto

Artist Davi.Augusto

Spotlight: K-Murdock

DC-based producer K-Murdock provides the beats for the hip-hop group Panacea and is a member of the genre-spanning band Restoring Poetry In Music. Heavily influenced by Japanese producer Nujabes (of Samurai Champloo fame), his beats are more layered than bass/kick-heavy and tend to favor creative, ascending 4-note structures. Sample his albums below:

Terry Riley - A Rainbow in Curve Air (1969)

More cosmic than the usually freak-out electronica of the late 60's, Terry Riley's 3rd studio album shows his skills as an arranger as he uses overdubbing to play all of the electronics on the album. The electronic harpsichord and electric organ give the record a 70's vibe but thankfully without the guitar-solos-to-the-gods and Phil Collins drum sets of the Prog Rock era.

Track 1: Imagine what the inside of Brian Eno's head sounds like on LSD as he's composing a piece while his kid plays NES in the next room.
Track 2: Effects, horns, and an albums worth of possible Four Tet samples.
